Starting August 1, Indian retail investors will officially be allowed to participate in algorithmic trading under Sebi’s new regulatory framework. This shift brings previously unregulated retail algo activity under supervision, aiming to democratize access while ensuring safety. However, retail algos—subject to approval, checks, and slower execution—will differ from the high-speed, complex systems used by institutions. A mandatory 'kill switch' feature has also been introduced to prevent systemic disruptions.
