U.S. stock indexes closed higher after a volatile trading day on Wednesday, initially dropping before recovering as investors made last-minute moves ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's broad tariff announcements.
Trump began speaking after Wall Street had closed, causing both S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures to reverse their gains. As he spoke, S&P 500 futures fell by 1.6%, while Nasdaq futures dropped by 2.4%.
