The rupee weakened by 4 paise to close at 83.97 against the US dollar on Wednesday, driven by strong demand for the greenback from importers, especially oil companies. However, forex traders noted that the downside was cushioned by positive domestic equities, foreign fund inflows, and an overnight drop in crude oil prices.
