Reliance's Jio Platforms gets space regulator's nod to launch satellite internet in India

A joint venture of Reliance Industries' Jio Platforms and Luxembourg's SES has secured approval from India's space regulator to deploy satellites, a government official confirmed to news agency Reuters.

Orbit Connect India, the joint venture, intends to offer gigabit fibre internet, competing with the likes of Amazon and Elon Musk's Starlink in India's burgeoning satellite communication market. The authorizations, granted by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre in April and June, enable Orbit Connect to operate satellites over India. However, additional clearances from the country's Department of Telecommunications are awaited for commencing operations.
